In 1950, MangWoo-dong(village), where public cemetery was located, was like the terminal stop of life where failures of life sought for.
Nowadays, through road expansions and land readjustment projects, transportation system became more convenient and the town changed into new housing and educational complex. However, during that time, it was more like a country, mostly farms and rice fields.
The name of church, 'Kumnan', comes from 'Kumnan Missionary Team' which was organized in 1957 by the late Dr. Hwal Nan KIM, the president of Ewha Womans University to start preaching all over the country.
In July of the same year, her team started to plant the seed of Gospel in MangWoo-dong(village) and had the first general worship at Kumnan hill in Mangwoo-dong in November of the following year. Building of the 15 pyeong tent church and around 10 people giving the first church service can be thought of as the start of Kumnan church.
Therefore, it was named Kumnan church, 'Kum' from Dr. Hwal Nan KIM's last name, KIM, and 'Nan' was from her first name, Nan.
In 1958, the first Pastor, Jung Ryun CHOI, was assigned and the 24 pyeong sanctuary was constructed on 1030 pyeong land which was donated by Ewha Womans University in May, 1961. The second pastor, WonWoo Yoo and the third pastor SeongKi Bek were appointed.
Kumnan church, based on 'Mission spirit' of Dr. HwalNan Kim and 'Saving the soul first spirit' of Rev. HongDo KIM, expanded as the largest Methodist church in the world.
